Gratitude feels good - and the health benefits of gratitude are well documented. Research has shown improvements in physical, emotional and mental health in people who have a regular gratitude practice - including stronger relationships, fewer trips to the doctor, increased happiness, stronger self-esteem, better sleep… and so much more.

There are many ways to practice gratitude. Start by noticing how many times a day you say “thank you.” Most of us say it out of good manners or politeness - but do you feel gratitude when you say “thanks”?

Some people like writing in a daily gratitude journal. One way to use a journal is to ponder what life would be like without certain people or opportunities - an exercise designed to spark feelings and thoughts of gratitude. Consider feeling gratitude for the smallest pleasures and gifts of life - a beautiful flower, a child’s smile, a warm cup of tea, etc.

Letting your loved ones know how much you love and appreciate them is a great way to boost gratitude. We’re all guilty of taking people for granted, especially those close to us. Tell someone you love just how grateful you are for their presence in your life - phone calls, emails and texts count!

My husband and I end our day by telling each other three good things that happened. This fun reminder keeps us focused on gratitude and positivity, even when life gets difficult. We also keep a gratitude jar and fill it with notes of things we are grateful for.

There are so many ways to incorporate gratitude into your life by using unique ideas such as a gratitude garden, taking a gratitude walk, using gratitude guided meditations, and more. You can even take an online Gratitude Quiz!

One of my favorite daily reminders is my Gratitude smartphone app. It sends me notifications every day to remind me to take time to feel gratitude. Here is a link to nine highly rated apps to enhance your gratitude experience.

Until next time - stay safe and be well!
